North, Ili or South Xinjiang?

Northern Xinjiang

Kanas and Hemu offer classic mountain, lake and forest scenery. Distances can be long, so eight days or more is preferable.

Ili Valley

Grasslands, flowers and snow mountains are relatively concentrated. A six-day journey can feel complete, making Ili suitable for families and slower travel.

Southern Xinjiang

Kashgar, the Pamir Plateau and canyon routes offer stronger cultural depth. Some sections are at altitude and may involve document or road checks.

Quick choice

• First visit and classic nature: north.
• Seniors, children and relaxed pacing: Ili.
• Culture, photography and old towns: south.
• Only five or six days: choose one region.
