Turn vague preferences into specific questions
A request for light food may mean less salt, no chilli or less oil to different people. Collect the family’s wishes and turn them into short questions: can chilli or sauce come separately, and can the dish use less oil? Ask the restaurant to confirm rather than treating a note as an accepted request.
Avoiding one kind of meat, eating only plant-based foods and disliking a flavour are different needs. Specify whether broth, side ingredients and seasonings also need checking. A dish name alone may not answer those questions.
Identify essential conditions before choosing a restaurant
Put ingredients that cannot be accepted in one column and flexible preferences in another. Share only necessary information through one family contact, and ask the provider to help identify restaurants able to answer the relevant questions.
If a dietary restriction affects personal safety, obtain appropriate individual professional guidance in advance and ask the restaurant directly about ingredients and preparation. Do not guess when answers are unclear. A driver’s recommendation is not a guarantee of suitable precautions.
Ask about portions and staples before choosing quantities
Groups can unintentionally order several large dishes alongside duplicate staple foods. Ask about approximate portions and whether a dish includes noodles or rice before deciding quantities for the actual group. Menu photographs are not a reliable guide to today’s portions.
Children may share suitable dishes if the family prefers, with an acceptable staple confirmed, rather than automatically needing full adult meals. If small portions are unavailable, start with fewer dishes and add more if needed, after checking whether later orders are practical.
Use a short confirmation script
For example: we have this many adults and children, and one person does not eat this ingredient. Is it in the broth or other components? Can chilli come separately? Do these dishes include staples, and approximately how many people will they serve? Please tell us which requests cannot be accommodated. This is a script, not a promise about any restaurant.
Check dish names, notes, quantities and displayed prices before submitting the order. If items are unavailable, agree on replacements first. Sharing the meal brief early also gives each family member a chance to express preferences without repeatedly restarting the order.
