Walk the night route first
Ask the traveller to walk from the bed to the bathroom and notice carpet edges, luggage racks, thresholds and corners. Keep slippers, water and frequent items where they can be reached without searching in the dark, and move everyone's cases out of the path.
Locate the switches for the bedside, entrance and bathroom lights. A gentle auxiliary light may help in a complicated room, but use electrical items according to hotel rules and do not alter installed equipment.
Check temperature and facilities before unpacking
Ask the older traveller how the room feels rather than letting younger relatives decide. Learn the controls for air conditioning, heating or ventilation, run them briefly and reassess. Equipment and seasonal operation differ, so ask reception when anything is unclear.
Check drinking water, the kettle, sockets, telephone and curtains. Group charging devices in a safe place and keep cables away from the walking route. Ask staff to explain unfamiliar facilities.
Report room issues together and early
If there is substantial noise, an equipment fault, an awkward location or existing damage, note the room number and exact issue and contact reception early. Waiting until the traveller is ready to sleep makes a possible room move much harder.
When hotel assistance is limited, adjust luggage placement, family support and night contact arrangements. Manage important personal items and medicine according to the established routine rather than leaving them in a shared, confusing area.
