Ask the traveller what matters to them

One person may need a seated toilet, another may be concerned about steps or distance from the vehicle, and another may want a relative waiting nearby. Discuss these needs privately, distinguishing essentials from preferences. Saying only that someone has limited mobility rarely tells a provider what to check.

If using a walking aid or wheelchair, explain the practical access and turning requirements and request details of the entrance and internal layout. This article does not prescribe facility dimensions or treat a label as a guarantee of suitability. Match the actual arrangement to the individual's needs.

Ask questions the provider can answer individually

Ask whether the route from a permitted vehicle stop has steps, how to find the entrance, whether a seated toilet is available and usable, and how family assistance can be arranged. If the response is simply accessible toilet available, ask where it is and which route reaches it. Staff need not assess a person's abilities.

Check accommodation, attractions and roadside breaks separately. One hotel's facilities do not establish what is available throughout the trip. Record the date, contact and unresolved questions. Where useful, request facility photographs that respect other users' privacy. Map icons, old guides and past visits are starting clues, not current verification.

Put verified facilities into the route and keep an alternative

Give the driver a concise request, such as a seated toilet, an entrance without steps and a nearby permitted drop-off. Mark what has been confirmed and what remains uncertain. The wish for a shorter walk must not become a demand for an unsuitable roadside stop. On arrival, establish the direction before bringing the traveller over.

Reconfirm that the intended facilities are usable on the day. If an essential feature remains uncertain, change the stopping place or shorten the activity rather than relying on drinking less or waiting longer. Share only the personal information needed to arrange support, and assign assistance privately beforehand.
