Choose for activities rather than photographs
Describe the walking tasks in your itinerary: paved city streets, attraction stairways or permitted nature paths. Ask the provider about expected surfaces, shorter options and any specific equipment requirements. This article does not report current trail access or surface conditions, and ordinary travel shoes are not equipment for every outdoor activity.
A trip based on city visits and short walks does not automatically require unfamiliar heavy footwear. Activities with explicit equipment requirements need preparation to those requirements. Familiarity, actual fit and present condition matter more than whether a shoe looks like outdoor gear.
Test the combination you will actually wear
Use your travel socks and loaded day bag rather than standing briefly in a different pair of thin socks. Walk somewhere familiar and safe. Notice repeated heel movement, pressure around the toes and whether steps make you adjust the laces repeatedly. This is an equipment check, not an endurance target.
Afterwards, inspect the inside for debris, the upper-to-sole connection for problems and the socks for bunching. If something rubs or feels uncomfortable, review fit, lacing and socks; use a proven comfortable alternative if needed. Long daily walks after arrival are not a reliable solution to poor fit.
Give the spare pair a clear job
A spare should cover a realistic need when the main pair is temporarily unusable, rather than simply add another photographic outfit. Check that it supports the basic movement you expect, then consider bulk. Plan for changing shoes and socks without packing a specialist pair for every hypothetical condition.
Let older relatives and children trial their own footwear and describe how it feels; an old size alone is not enough information. If walking proves harder than expected after arrival, shorten the activity or use a confirmed alternative. Suitable shoes do not replace sensible pacing or justify entering closed areas.
