Shanghai extends serious-disease registration validity to one year

Official Shanghai guidance says serious-disease registration under the city's basic medical insurance is now valid for one year, which can reduce repeat paperwork for eligible patients receiving longer outpatient treatment.

On April 9, the Shanghai government English portal published medical-insurance guidance stating that each serious-disease registration in the city's basic medical insurance system is valid for one year starting April 1, instead of six months.

The official explanation says eligible patients can register through a qualified hospital or medical-insurance service window. It also notes that some cross-provincial patients may use direct settlement in Shanghai if they complete the required filing and qualification procedures in advance.

For patient planning, the practical value is administrative stability during longer treatment cycles rather than a change in clinical care. Travelers and families should still confirm insurance eligibility, designated-hospital rules and direct-settlement availability with the insurer, hospital and local authorities before relying on the policy.
